Today we had hoped to relax and not do much, and boy did we succeed. As per my norm, we took a sleeping pill last night to help with the ever present jet lag. My rule is a sleeping pill the first 3 nights, then we are good to go the rest of the time. Generally it allows us to sleep pretty well, or at least well enough that we are functional.
Last night however, we slept, and slept and slept...and finally got up at 1130am! Since we had gone to bed around 11p, we were heading into our 13th hour of sleep. I finally got myself up and took a shower. Ken, however was having none of it and had no interest in climbing out of bed. After some crankiness on both sides, he finally dragged himself up and we went in search of coffee and food. This is the first time in all our travels that getting up was so difficult. We still aren't sure if it was the pills or just exhaustion, my guess is it was a combination of the two.
We found a busy bakery just down the hill and sat outside in the beautiful sunny weather with cappuccinos and pastries. We ordered a bun with ham and cheese, which turned out to be a very interesting combination of a soft coconut sweet roll with the ham/cheese. I loved it, Ken not so much.
After waking up a bit we took a walk around the main downtown shopping area which was bustling with post-Christmas shoppers. After some wandering, we were both ready for a nap...even though we had been awake for just a couple of hours!! We found the stairs that led up to the over-look we had found last night and definitely got some cardio in as the stairs seemed never-ending.
We took a 2 hour nap and then decided it was time to really get up and see a bit of the city. We took some different small streets and ended back down around the shopping area that we had been earlier. This time it was packed with runners getting ready for an evening 5k. There were thousands of very fit people warming up and jogging to beginning of the race. We went the opposite direction and found a nice greenbelt that led up a hill to a nice view of the water and city.
On the way back, we saw the Ritz and decided to stop in for a beverage, they usually have nice bars. We relaxed in the beautiful setting before heading back to the Barrio Alto, our area of the city. A few blocks from our apartment, we found a small, but busy restaurant that looked promising. The tables were packed together, and we were able to get a small table. Within a few minutes of settling in, the entire place was full and there was a line waiting outside. Perfect timing!! We enjoyed a nice dinner of grilled sardines (not like the ones in the can), fish cakes and a great bottle of Portuguese red wine.
The day was winding down and we headed back to the apartment to sleep (again!!).

maria mcclung yp, I would guess it was exhaustion with ken. I am familiar with this, had it every time we arrived and later after getting back here...but, what a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas afterwards..everything here was very quiet, we walked bye the houses and then were glad to come home.your Christmas décor looked nice, not many people decorated this year. your lated dinners sounded great. and as always loved your blog. now I am ready to have lunch and later take a nap and listen to the rain. light rain all day so far..i am looking forward to # 3...
