Once again we woke to grey skies and rain. Our last activity as a group was a walking tour of Dubrovnik. Luckily we had all purchased umbrellas the day before in Korcula, plus the Hilton had more available, so off we went in the drizzle.
Ivan, our tour guide was funny and informative. We hiked through the small alleys and up on the wall, all while learning the long history of this beautiful town. Due to the rain, the stone stairs and walkways were very slippery, and we saw an elderly gentleman take a hard tumble at the beginning of the walk. So we were all very careful, as no one wanted any injuries as a final souvenir.
At the end of the 2 hour tour, it was time to say goodbye to our new friends and fellow bike riders. After 6 days of slogging up hills, sharing meals, screaming downhills, getting medical attention and sharing life stories, it is always sad to leave the group. We had a really great group that was diverse, fun, educated and probably the most well-traveled we have come across. Special thanks to Katja and Anjay who were just amazing as our leaders for the week. They had a lot of logistics to deal with between boats, bikes, broken elbows and everything in between and they handled all with a smile and humor. Can't ask for anything more.
Ken and I finished the remainder of the wall and then headed to the hotel to get packed up. We were moving to Laptola Apartments for the weekend and Kristof was picking us up at noon. We found him right on time and drove the short 10 minute drive to the apartment. We got settled in and then walked back down to Old Town to find some lunch.
We didn't have to look long, as right at the bottom of the stairs was a terrace with tables overlooking the marina and the Walls. Even though there were a large Japanese tour group, we snagged a table with a great view and enjoyed some salad and calamari. Then it was back up the stairs for some R&R (translation: NAP). After 6 days of being on the go, it was time to relax, and that we did. After several hours of sleeping, we woke to some major rain. So, we relaxed some more.
We were due to meet some of of our biking friends for dinner, and at 630 it was POURING. But, we bucked up...put on some rain ponchos, grabbed the umbrella and headed out. By the time we got back to the Hilton we were soaked. But, we met Diane, Stephen, Lucille and Barbara for a great dinner in Old Town...no matter the state of our shoes (which were squishy wet).
By the time we were done with dinner, the rain had subsided a bit, so we were able to get back to the room without getting even more wet. But, it was slick and we had to keep careful watch of where we were walking. Hopefully tomorrow it is nicer!
