We arrived in Harar yesterday afternoon - flying from Addis to Dire Dawa, where our driver picked us up at the airport. We were a few hours late in leaving Addis, and our driver was pushing it a bit to try and make the 90 min drive to Harar before dark.
Our hotel here is something else. Nothing like the one in Addis, which I suspect is a one-off. Apparently it is only 5 years old, but it was built old. On the other hand, it is a large spacious room, with a huge double bed and hot water - albeit a bit slow moving.
Today has been a full-on day. Our driver and guide picked us up after breakfast, and we spent more or less a full day walking through the old town. Every day is market day here, so there is plenty of colour and noise.
It is the tail end of the wet season, so while this morning was quite hot and sunny, about 2:30 in the afternoon it started to bucket down - for just over an hour. At 4PM our driver and guide picked us up again, and we went to visit the third museum of the day, and then for a drive around the old wall (approx. 3.5km), and then a drive out for the panoramic view of the old town.
At the moment we are ensconced in the lobbly of the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, waiting for our driver and guide to return, and then we are going out to watch the hyenas being fed. It seems this is the best place in Africa to be a hyena.
After that it's back to the hotel for one of their culinary masterpieces - and one of their excellent coffees. Tomorrow we hit the road early for the drive down to the Awash National Park. It will be interesting to see if they have WiFi there!
