Well was at the so called 8th Wonder of the World today; Angkor Wat. the largest religious building in the world! Was soooo great to have seen it first hand rather than on the pictures!
Was an early start this morning though as tuk-tuk driver was picking me Carmel and Rebecca up at 8am so we had full day at wandering the various Temples! Started off at the the Angkor thom part of Angkor Wat complex where the Bayon Temple is housed! this one was my favourite as had soooo much detail all around it! Everywhere you looked you were being followed by the stone faces carved into the Temple spent all morning wandering there and around the other ones that made up Angkor Thom (wish I could remember all the names but they weren't very well sign posted) After Angkor Thom we moved on to Ta Phenom (i think) which has the trees growing throughout the temple buildings (pictures explain it a lot better and will get them up soon promise) before having lunch to prepare ourselves for Angkor Wat itself!
The scale of Angkor Wat is mind blowing yet it lacks the detail of the Bayon Temple. To walk through the gates was once compared to wandering through the gates of the universe maybe am not that broad minded but we certainly didn't feel that and was almost a slight anti-climax to what the books had predicated we would feel! Spine tingling it wasn't sadly. But as an architectural feat and a testament to human skill it certainly is mind blowing! After climbing to the top we had a much needed rest in the shade away from the baking sun (tan is certainly improving now!! WoopWoop) we then climbed all the way back down and headed to find our trusty tuk-tuk driver and head back along the bumpy roads of Siem Reap to our hostel! Where a much needed shower was in order after the heat and dust of the temples!
Lazy day planned tomorrow! Wandering markets and riverside before embarking on 10hour bus journey to Shinoukeville on Friday where the white sandy beaches awaits! Exciting!!
Love
