I spoke too soon! On our last evening in Laos I remarked to Roger how lucky we had been that all our transport arrangements had gone so smoothly. The very next morning we arrived at Vientiane airport to check in for our 11.40 am flight to Bangkok only to be told that it had been cancelled and the earliest flight we could get was 6.45 that evening! We were not enthralled at the prospect of 8 hours hanging about at the airport and made a fuss nicely! Anyway whatever we did worked well because not only were we given a voucher for a free lunch but were also squeezed onto a flight at 1.50 pm travelling business class! Felt a bit sorry for the other passengers who were still dossing about the airport.
That evening we were able to go to dinner in our favourite restaurant on the river in Bangkok. The location is fantastic sitting outside on the patio watching the lights of the royal palace across the water.
For our last day we decided to go on an excursion to Ayetthaya, the ancient ruined capital of Thailand. On the way we stopped off at the Bang Pa-In summer palace which was lovely and contained buildings in various architectural styles. Very green and restful. Ayetthaya is made up of various ruined wats some over 600 years old and we visited 3 of them. We then cruised back to Bangkok along the Chao Phraya river and enjoyed a really good buffet lunch on the way. Finished off what had been a really good last day with a swim in the hotel's roof pool before heading to airport for journey home.
