Leaving Sun Village early in the morning (about 7am) we drove to the port, parked the hire car in the car park and boarded the ferry for the Island of Santorini. Today we got up and went early to drive up to the Lasithi Plateau. We planned to hire bikes here but none were to be found. Typical of Greece, some things are obviously able to be done but who knows how or where? Today we headed off to the Palace of Knossos to see the ancient Minoan Ruins. This is Crete's top tourist sight and a great visit. It turned out to be a free entry day, nice for the wallet but decidedly not nice for the crowds. Greece is busy and there are often queues (and it's not yet the busy season in these parts). Today we left Hania and headed to Rethymno. This city is listed as similar to Hania but it has its own character and we loved exploring it. It doesn't have such a big harbour that the town is centred around but nevertheless it has a lovely waterfront and we had coffee in a cafe near the Old Springs in the centre of the Old Town and another yoghurt ice cream. Leaving our hotel in Hania on Crete after a good breakfast we drove down to the old section of Hania town to explore. What we found was the an old fort wall around the port section. But even more delightful was the harbour setting lined with shops and restaurants all around the bay. The atmosphere was buzzing and walking through the streets behind the waterfront we marvelled at the beautiful little alleys with pretty houses and flowers tucked into every corner....
