Arrived in Qualicum Beach Thursday. Was a beautiful ferry ride over. The sun was shining and the water was like glass. It takes 2 hours to cross from Tsawwassen to Duke Point in Nanaimo. For some reason, the gps insisted on running a simulation program and we could not get a signal on the iPad or the cell phone, so we got lost. Drove to Yakima, Washington today. On the way, we crossed the 45th parallel complete with a sign saying that we were 1/2 way between the equator and the North Pole. We hadn't realized that Washington is an hour earlier than Oregon, so we arrived at our hotel early and our room was ready. Spent some time relaxing at the pool. Dinner was at Mel's Diner. Some down home food. Decor was set up from the 50's.

Today is one of those days when I know I'm getting older. I can actually hide my camera from myself and not be able to find it 15 hours later. Consequently, that held up this mornings departure by 1/2 hour. Even more disturbing was that I only found it on the second time I searched the same place! Since we have to be in Qualicum Beach for the 15-18, we have to start heading north today. You can't do everything, so we skipped Capitol Reef National Park. Maybe if we're back this way sometime..... We are spending the night on the north end of Salt Lake City. We learned on the way down that rush hour starts early here, and it was already heavy traffic at 2:45. The highway is 5 lanes wide and it helps to use the HOV lane. Went to MacCool's Irish Pub for dinner....

Today's excursion is to Canyonlands National Park. There are a couple of hikes that we are interested in doing here. The first is easy and the must see in Canyonlands and that's to Mesa Arch. It's quite a large arch and because it's easily accessible, there were a lot of people there. It was difficult to get a photo without people in it. There was a beautiful, expansive view of the canyon through the arch. It looks like this canyon is as large as the Grand Canyon...
