Copacabana, not only is it a beach in Rio De Janeiro but it is a lakeside resort on the banks of Lake Titicaca.
To get there we took yet another ´tourist´ bus, once again sold under the guise of security. This time unlike the other bus there was no toilet and somewhat ricketty old bus. The common theme would be the lunatic driver, taking us there at breakneck speeds. This could prove interesting - a 3hr journey with various passengers suffering from Bolivia Belly, no toilet and Formula1 speeds.
The first part of the journey was to get us from La Paz to the waters edge. Once there we would need to take a ´ferry´to the otherside where we could continue with our death race. Upon arrival we were greeted with what could only be called a wooden skiff with a motor on it - that was for the bus. The passenger boat was a true boat and quite a pleasant ride. Just hoping that the skiff carrying the bus carrying our bags got there safely.
Both passenger and cargo arrived safely and after a little word with the driver it would seem we would be travelling at speeds closer to what the bus manufacturer would deem fitting.
It wouldn´t take much longer before we would arrive in Copacabana where we would go through the ritual of finding a place to stay. This by now had become quite an art. After viewing a few different places we chose a hotel right on the front with panoramic views of the lake. On face value this hotel looked very nice for the price we paid. Only after taking a walk around the town and then returning did we notice that there were some odd characters to be found within its walls. We noticed some guy absolutely naked moisturising himself through an open window in full view of the whole lakeside. After seeing thisBen had a local crazy man sing him a prayer whilst Rita and co ran away leaving him to fend for himself.
We were to spend a couple of days in this hotel, using it as our base before we headed over to Isla De Sol(Sun Island) and Isla De La Luna (Moon Island) both of which had various Inka ruins and were well worth a look.
On returning from our trip there we moved hotel to possibly the most surreal place we´d seen in the whole of the trip. The place was known as Las Olas (Waves), it was a set of individual buildings that had been designed and built by a German ex-pat. Some of them were shaped like mushrooms, others like eggs. It was a great place, that we loved so much that we decided to extend our stay by a couple of days.
When the time finally came for us to leave it wasn´t to be so simple. The bus tha we had already booked tickets on was now facing delays as there were road blocks in place between Copacabana (Bolivia) and Puno(Peru). After much discussion with the bus company we decided to postpone that days journey and stay another night. The company had been suggesting that we take a number of buses and then walk past the blockade and get picked up on the other side. Somehow though we thought that the protestors wouldn´t be too pleased to see a load of gringos ignoring their blockade and strolling past them. One more night in the Las Olas complex :) The next day relaxed and ready to go our bus journey was given the go ahead and we set off for Peru.
