I think the title pretty much tells you my thoughts on the historical Hout Bay. I wasn't a fan.
Another day off, another bit of sightseeing before home. Next on my list was Hout Bay. I arrived expecting an interesting old sea town, fishermen, maybe a few nice boats. Seagulls. When I got off the bus it was like walking into a shanty town - there were so many tramps or down and outs it was uncomfortable. Maybe I was just in the wrong bit, more than likely.
On the way round to the excursion stalls there are several local "down and Hout's" (haha!), who have managed to befriend a few seals that hang around the harbour and have taught the tricks. One of them put some fish in his mouth, stood over the water and the seal jumped out and took it. Gross. Impressive but gross. After a while they start going round asking for "money for fish", yeah, of course its for fish... It was quite amsing when he started shouting at a Chinese tourist who was taking pictures and accused him of stealing! Er ironic? As if he owns those seals!! Paha!
Paid 60 ZAR to get the ferry to Seal Island to see all the fur seals, there are literally thousands. Everywhere. At one point I thought the boat was going to plough right through them all. I think they survived. I can't believe I got on a boat and forgot, again, that I hate boats. After the rockiest 45 minute journey I obviously had to go and calm my nerves with a couple of mojitos at the Mariners Wharf, a restaurant on the harbour, before any more travelling.
It wasn't my favourite place anyway, but I have a Cape Peninsula Tour booked for the week before I fly home, and I think its on the itinerary (joy!)....maybe I'll find it interesting then...
