Day 37: Chilling in Colonia
Our agenda for Uruguay: chill. And that's exactly what we did. Comotose until 10:30, pottering around making breakfast and slowly waking up to the day, it was early afternoon before we left the hostel.
And to be honest, we didn't do a whole lot... we strolled through the gorgeous little town, admiring the unusual colour of the river and the quaintness of the town that was all of a sudden alive with daytrippers, who obviously don't hang around for the evening. We pottered for a little while longer seeing the town so differently in the daylight, before it felt socially acceptable to have a drink. Anja and I planted ourselves outside a restaurant in the sun and whiled away an hour or two with a couple of glasses of wine, discussing life, love, opportunity and privilege. Just how holidays should be spent.
We continued our session back at the hostel where I made us some lunch (our deal: I do the cooking, she does the cleaning - what a team) and cracked open another lovely bottle of wine. While we ate, an older Australian lady burst into our space to talk at us about her mad adventures travelling in South America. Having to sleep on bus terminal floors and finding herself in random towns with no accommodation, she entertained us for a good half an hour (uninterrupted) before we made our escape.... with our wine!
We headed to the pier for sunset (so romantic!) and low and behold, our old tourgroup were also there! But we were on our own buzz (and had our own means of merriment).
When the sun went down, the question of what to do for dinner was back on the cards... sure, why think? We just went back to the place with the cardboard cutouts of famous Uruguayan footballers from last night... Uruguayan pesos were running low anyway.
I got a "special" which was pork chops served with the most enormous portion of mashed potatoes, and we ate it back at the hostel. All wined out now and stuffed, we settled into the couch, in front of the fire and a weird Argentinian talkshow with some of the locals. The hostel, fuller tonight, we were disappointed to find other people in our dorm... we had a good run!
Accommodation: El Viajero
Weather: bright but cold during the day; chilly, chilly at night.
