Today started off well:
- Siobh woke up feeling a lot better and healthy enough to get off the island, (although still not 100%).
- We both went for some breakfast and Siobh managed some toast while I devoured the best fresh fruit, muesli, and yoghurt EVER! (See picture)
- We got on the boat into the cool bottom level which we had to our selves and spread out over 6 seats.
A good start to the day, until...sat on the boat half an hour out at sea and Siobh bolted upright, turned to me and said 'did you pick up the deposit from the hotel when you checked out?'
I didn't even need to answer, she knew I had forgot! That's an extra 500 baht to add to the most expensive hotel room to date! It's only £10 but that would have payed for our room tonight. Not in the good books!
We arrived on Ko Lanta on time after a short 1 hour journey. We found some cheap accommodation in a slightly dated but funky resort. There are 2 pools, 2 restaurants, and 2 chill out bars.
Siobhs appetite is back and we had lunch in one of the restaurants. A easy to handle cheese sarnie for Siobh and a house special fried rice for me.
We retreated to the room and fell asleep for the afternoon.
Darkness had fallen while we slept so we had to venture out into the unknown. We walked along the pitch black main road adjacent to the beach where we could see the signs of life a few hundred meters away. We walked out of the dark and into a cluster of the usual roadside restaurants, shops, tattoo parlours, and travel agencies. It was nice to see less concrete than we have been used to in Thailand and more predominantly wooden/bamboo built shops and eateries. We started with drinks in a lantern lit garden of a veggie restaurant and moved on to Kwans cookery for some food. A cookery school by day and a restaurant by night, Kwans kitchen out in the open air and in full view of the restaurant and people passing by. A number of Thai women can be seen frying up a storm behind the wall of fresh vegetables and herbs. It was sold to us at first sight. Chicken larb (spicy salad) and tofu red curry pad Thai was ordered and minuets later the chefs are out picking the fresh veg and herbs from the display. If the chef has a question she would just ask the table directly i.e. Level of spice, allergies to nuts, tofu/no tofu? It was delicious!
Mango smoothie cleansed the pallet to finish before the short walk back through the darkness to our resort.
