We arrived in Sucre at 4am with no hostel booked - luckily one of the b&bs we had written down let us in (after a while of knocking and waiting). We shared a taxi with a couple from England, John and Becky, who we had met previously at the salt flats. The Santa Celia was a beautiful family run b&b with extremely helpful and friendly owners.
We got a really good first impression of Sucre, with blue skies and sun which was amazing after 3 days of minus temperatures! The main plaza reminded us of Arequipa, with a pedestrian/ green area and central statues. This part of the city seemed very clean and more modern than a lot of places we had seen. On the first day we visited the dinosaur park, which holds some of the largest dinosaur footprints ever found as well as the longest trail of the same dinosaurs path (the bbc were filming recently in the park which will be aired in 2013).
Later on in the afternoon we discovered the local night market, which was a lot more fun than any others we had been to, party because it was aimed at locals and not just tourists. It reminded us of a fun fair with music, a lot of street food, toffee apples, chocolate fondue etc, a couple of dodgy looking rides that you wouldn't think twice about going on and lots of raffle type games. There was also a dog show which was probably the first time we had seen dogs on leads! (usually they are running all over the place, chasing and barking at cars looking very flea bitten and mixed bred - the most ugly we saw had a grey body with no fur, with ginger ears and tail).
We had a really nice evening meal of a local dish, chicken in a spicy sauce with onions and potatoes.
The following day was a relaxed one, catching up on the Premier League and enjoying familiar food in an English bar. At 6pm we embarked on our mammoth 24hour journey to Salta (Argentina), crossing the border at Villazon.
