Today we drove to Milan to check out the fashion capital of Italy. We parked the car a bit outside the city and caught the metro. As soon as we walked out of our stop, we were greeted with the imposing sight of duomo de Milano (the cathedral of Milan). It was built around 1400AD and has the striking features that are found in gothic structures. We
then wandered through the famous galleria that adjoins the duomo square and did the traditional spin with the heels of our feet in the bull carving in the ground - apparently this brings you luck so fingers crossed.
We then wandered the teatro allo scala (the opera theatre) and down monte napoleone (the trendiest street in Milan with the most expensive designer shops).
We then had lunch at a Japanese restaurant that was run by Chinese
people. That tells you all you need to know. On the way to our next stop, we sampled the world famous gelato called Grom - very delicious. We made our way back to the metro to go to the church - Santa Maria Della Grazia which is the church with the last supper painted in the refectory (which is not the lunch room at QUT gardens point for those of you wondering). We couldn't see the painting as it is booked out months in advance but it was a nice small church all the same. We walked a few more blocks and through the ancient castle that used to contain the city within it's walls in medieval times.
We went back to the main shopping district and browsed a bit. We then made our way home and went for dinner at the favorite local restaurant - awesome food (home-made pasta and wood-fired pizzas) and great service.
