Round The World Trip 2006
Fraser Island, the largest sand island on Earth, is a very cool place to be.
Over the 3 day trip, we were lucky on the weather front as it only rained on the first night, which is surprising as the island is home to a large Rainforest.
We set off with the with the group from our hostel at around 10:30 to catch the 11am ferry over to Fraser.
The LandCruisers were proper 4x4 trucks and for the most part, swooned through the sand effortlessly.
After a 20 minute charge down a rough road, we finally hit the beach and stopped for lunch as it was high tide and too dangerous to continue at the time.
An hour later, we turned the sand into our highway and powered the truck upto Eurong and through to Lake McKenzie. This place is arguably the most picturesque area of Fraser Island, with it's beautiful soft white sand and clear unsalted water, A long swim in this lake is a must.
Another highlight was Indian Head where our group witnessed huge shoals of fish being antagonised by sharks, turtles and manta ray; Awesome!
Camping by the beach just behind sand dunes was an experience in itself and is the first time I've really felt I've been adventuring.
A visit to Fraser is a must. If you visit the East Coast of Oz, do it!
Until next time...
