During our trip in New Zealand Milford Sound had been built up as an amazing experience just by word of mouth.

To be honest, I was painfully dissapointed. The Kiwi Experience bus ride for this particular section is an 8 hour round trip. So after 4 hours of sitting on a bus doing your best to take in the views after getting up at some unearthly hour, a random and arguably simple looking ferry takes you on a 2 Hour cruise through the Sound, which we were told isn't really a Sound at all, it's a Fiord.
After a quick visit to a make shift under-water "observatory" to see some Black Coral, you're taken back to the dock via some waterfalls that the captain basically drives into.

Overall, a very lacklustre experience and one I would have avoided if I'd known the truth. I've heard that Doubtful Sound (An actual Sound) is supposed to be bigger, quieter and overall better for the traveller looking for something a little more relaxing.

On the plus side, I can cross it off my list as an experience all the same. The landscape you have to travel through to get there is breath-taking too.
