Noyelles Travels
Friday 1st April
Up at 6.15 & down for breakfast before we went to the airport to fly to Ho Chi Minh & then on to Hue.
The first flight was in a small turbo prop plane but because of the low cloud we didn't see anything until we reached Ho Chi Minh airport. Here we cleared immigration & customs & walked to the domestic airport for the next flight. After a couple of false starts we joined a long queue for check in & then walked what seemed to be miles to our gate for the flight to Hue.
This flight was delayed an hour so we had plenty of time To savor the delights of the airport.
Eventually we arrived in Hue & to our delight, it was much cooler. We were taken to our hotel in the city & after dinner, had an early night.
Saturday 2nd April
After an early breakfast on the top floor we looked for a day tour but settled on a pair of trishaws to take us across the river to the Imperial Palace. Here we spent an hour wandering through the remaining buildings which had some excellent displays about the life in the palace between 1803 & 1945, when the last emperor abdicated at the request of Ho Chi Minh. What struck us both were the similarities with Chinese courts in operation. It was a great contrast to the Cambodian system.
We returned to our hotel & at 2pm were met outside & taken for a ride on the Perfumed River nearby. The boat was a 15m sampan complete with ornate dragon motif at the bow & we sat in solitary state as it sailed about 2 km up river to the Thien Mu Pagoda. Here we climbed up & saw the complex before returning on the boat to the start.
We walked around the block which is mostly bars & cafes & enjoyed a beer each for about 50 cents & after a rather ordinary dinner at a local restaurant in the street, we had another reasonably early night.
Sunday 3rd April
A fairly lazy day as we were moving on to Hanoi in the afternoon. We lounged about for quite a while & after lunch were picked up for transfer to the station where we sat in the very tired waiting room for our overnight train, which set off just as it started to rain although this didn’t last long. Our compartment was shared with a young couple, on holiday, from the Gold Coast . It was interesting to hear about his work as a high school teacher & hers studying Japanese.
Luckily we both had the lower bunks but they were very hard & it was very noisy as the train rattled & shook its way north. Sleep was fitful for both of us & we won’t be taking it again. The train arrived at 6am in Hanoi.
