Noyelles Travels 2017
Saturday 8th April
Woke up at about 6am to find us on the way into the port complex of Cartagena. Although we had been before we were surprised at the distance from the mouth of the harbour, with a 17th century fort to guard it, into our berth at the cruise terminal where we moored up with 2 other large cruise ships.
Leaving the ship we were shuttle bussed to the exit area complex which comprises a small rainforest are with pink flamingos, peacocks & black swans, a large shop selling locally made products & an open aviary with 20 plus beautiful multicoloured macaws of various breeds. We shared a taxi, with a couple from another ship, the 4 km into the old town through a mixture of port buildings, some fine 19th century houses & high rise units & shops.
On arrival we walked towards the cathedral, which unfortunately is being repaired & found ourselves in one of the main squares where we had a much needed coffee. Then on to the library to try, without success, to access the internet before wandering up to the sea wall to walk in the breeze & admire the old town. It was 2 years since we were here last with Jenny & the centre is very much the same as then but the surrounding newer areas seem to have more & more, high rise blocks of units under construction.
We had a break at a small side street cafe for a very welcome couple of beers & a good wi-fi connection & to our surprise saw pictures & a poster of Mompos, the old city on the Magdalena River we had visited before. After more fairly aimless wandering we came to a less touristy area of shops selling haberdashery, fabrics, buttons, buckles & ribbons & further on, shoes. Jane bought a fine pair of sandals & some gifts & we returned to the clock tower square to return, by taxi, to the cruise terminal after another welcome drink in a smart bar.
At the complex we bought some more gifts & returned to our ship, moored next to a huge Celebrity X cruise ship.
As we left the dock Jane took some excellent pictures of the setting sun behind the high rise part of Cartagena & we left there pleased to see it looking so prosperous & clean.
