Alaska and the Canadian Rockies
Wednesday 18th June Dawson to Fairbanks Up at 5am bags out at 6am and ready for a long day. We crossed the Yukon at Dawson by ferry and Les had "Moon River" playing. Les laid down a challenge - $1 each to enter and you had to guess how many cars we would pass on the left before we got to the Alaska Highway junction.
It's 2 degrees outside and snowing as we motor over the Top of the World Highway and re-enter Alaska. Stopped for a quick photo and snowball fight. One side of the border was Poker Creek Alaska and the other Little Gold Creek Canada. Les put on the "Chicken Dance Song". We thought it was funny as we travelled through the village of Chicken (population 7). We had a short stop here, had some chicken soup. We continued onto Tok where we had lunch at Fast Eddies - another bear sighting!! We crossed over the Robertson River Bridge which is a deck truss bridge and Les played "Bridge over Troubled Waters". Continuing on we passed the Big Delta which is at the confluence of the Delta River and the Tanana River and gets it name from the huge river delta formed by the confluence. We saw the largest suspended bridge of the Trans Alaska oil pipe line over the Tanana River and passed by the Fairbanks Air Force Base. Then Les put on a Beach Boys Christmas song, we were entering the suburb of the North Pole, Fairbanks. The street lights and signs were all done up like candy canes, even McDonalds. We went to the Santa Shop, saw some Reindeers and even saw Santa. Our last stop was at our accomodation the Bridgewater Hotel. We were all very tired from the long days activities so we had dinner near our hotel at Soupy Smiths and had a few drinks at a redneck bar called the Mecca Bar.
