Rich & Alli's Travels
Next morning and one blocked up toilet later (toilets in Central America are not sturdy enough to handle Rich), we left Cancun for Isla de Mujeres.
We mentioned we were concerned about carrying our bags now we had left the car behind. With this in mind we called a taxi to the hotel door, took a taxi to the port, then got a porter to carry our bags on to the boat for us. Well it was hot and we didn't want to get sweaty!
After a short boat ride across to Isla de Mujeres, we walked the ten minutes to our hostel to join the other sweaty backpackers. Not sure if other backpackers out there have experienced this, but it seems to us in our little experience of hostels that there are little in-groups at hostels, so you walk in and it goes silent as the tumble weed rolls across the floor. We heard one guy saying something about the dynamics or mood had changed the last few days with people arriving......it is a hostel after all mate and people are meant to turn up and leave as they please! So we're not really in with the hak-e-sak crowd yet, but we're not losing any sleep about it in our private rooms with air conditioning and private bathroom!
Anyway (another rant over), Isla de Mujeres is a little island off the coast of Cancun, which is a pretty nice and chilled town filled with locals and a lot of backpackers too. We took a taxi down to the Turtle Farm after checking in, and saw all kinds of turtles in small manmade pools. The Lonely Planet said you will see turtles on the beach, but after a hurricane a few years back a lot of the turtles habitat was washed or blown away, so they saved many of the turtles and are now trying to rebuild the population before releasing them back in the wild. Some of the little fellas were only 9 months old, so were very cute.
Also at the farm were sea horses and white turtles, not to mention a young English lad who decided to pick up a turtle to pose for his mum to take a picture, after specifically being told not to touch the turtles. Trust the English!
Next stop is Playa Del Carmen.
