We arrived in Tupiza at 9am the next day, after five hours on a train. Tupiza is famous for being the place where Butch Cassidy and Sundance kid robbed their last train, before hiding out in a barn and being killed in the ensuing shoot-out.
Unfortunately South Bolivia is not known for it´s smooth roads, so we discovered when we arrived that to get to the barn and the cemetary where they are supposedly burried (although they have now been exhumed to check it was really them, but apparently it may be a German engineer in one of the graves) takes ten hours door-to-door, though we could visit the site of the hold-up. This also took about six hours, so we decided not to bother as there´s probably nothing there anyway.
After a day relaxing in Tupiza and another revolting meal of green, sloppy pasta and cheese in batter, we awoke at 3am to catch a bus to the Argentine border. What we wouldn´t give for a whole night in bed!
The next journey was gruesome. We caught the bus at 4am and got to the border at 6.10am, where we crossed into Argentina and caught another bus to Salta at 9am. The journey took seven hours, but would have been a lot shorter had the army not searched everyone on the bus five times.
We assume a lot of people smuggle coca from Bolivia to Argentina, as twice we had to leave the bus and carry our bags over so they could be searched, but luckily they didn´t search us and focused on the locals instead (we have innocent faces), as it would have been a nightmare trying to squeeze everything back in. The army also had sniffer dogs which boarded the bus at a few stops. Eventually they kept one guy back and we carried on to Salta.
Arriving at Salta in the evening, we took another bus to Resistencia overnight which took twelve hours, before getting another ten hour bus to Puerto Iguazu. Next stop Iguaza Falls, after very long showers!!!
