The weather is still overcast as we drive further west from Cape Otway, but brighter so at least the photos are not as bad as they could be. So on we travel, away from the coast through rainforest where tree ferns spilled over the edge of the road, up to Lavers Hill then down, down, back to the coast, back inland a bit and coast again and then ……….. it just seemed out of nowhere, buses, vans, cars, people, people more people. Yep here we are at the Twelve Apostles, surely the most iconic tourist attraction on the Great Ocean Road. We were astounded by the number of tourists, 90% being Asian, busloads! The paths, lookouts and walkways around this whole area are fantastic and afford so many opportunities for photos and viewing of these amazing limestone stacks.
They were originally known as the Sow and Piglets – this was recorded in 1846. Nobody seems to know when the name was changed but it was thought to be around 1922, but obviously the local population felt these icons had far more dignity than farmyard animals ! Let's face it, you really can’t promote such a tourist attraction with a name like that!
Only 8 stacks are left with the ninth one dramatically collapsing in 2005 – it doesn't seem that long ago!
The salt spray and the thunder of the massive waves cannot be described. You just had to be there! The sea is relentless and it is so easy to understand how all these were formed with the erosion of the soft limestone by wind, rain and attack of the ocean.
All along this part of the coast the waves are amazing, would be great surfing if you dared and could get towed out! We actually did see this and the waves were amazing!
It is easily seen how the mainland will end up as stacks eventually as the seas gouge caves into the cliffs, which become headlands that will eventually cause collapses and then separation.
We are totally blown away with this incredible sight. It a shame we didn't have a very nice day and no sunshine, but I think the photos reflect that this really didn't matter at the end of the day. We are just grateful it wasn't raining and that we could comfortably visit this area.
It was getting late in the day and decided to stop at Port Campbell overnight. A nice little town and a good caravan park. We checked the forecast and found the following day was to be cloudless and sunny. Make that two nights here!
