The road from Dunedin was the most picturesque we had seen I think. As we got closer to the mountains the amazing emerald pastures for miles, bordered by lines of macrocarpa and poplar trees, the willows all but naked. All of this with the hills dotted with white, white sheep on emerald grass which gave way to red tussock.
Incredible contrasts in colour with the bright blue sky, the 'icing sugar' snow on the mountains and the deep green of the pines.. It is hard to put into words the spectacle of this drive so you need to check out the photos.
Te Anau is just beautiful and even though it was around 8 degrees, a walk along the lake was a must in the last half hour before the sun went down.
It is an early night tonight as we are up early to drive the 2.5 hours to Milford Sound. We don't want to miss our boat trip.
