Hello all! Today we are in Napflio. Yesterday morning we were able to call the car rental place and they picked us up at our hotel at noon. We were on our way out of Athens (the armpit of Greece, mind you,) and out into the unknown by 12:30. We made it to Corinth and saw Akrokorinth (Ancient Corinth.) Finding the right place was quite the cluster. The road and street signs are very difficult to read. Sometimes they match the map, and sometimes they don't. The letters don't match up to what we know. We are looking forward to the rest of the countries which at least are also romantic languages.
It was such a pretty town and the ruins were amazing. We liked that we were able to walk among the ruins at this place, down the original streets. Then we traveled south to ancient Epiduros, which had the phenomenol Theater of Epiduros. Hopefully I'll get some pictures up soon, but you can google those if you have the time. We don't, we're paying 3 euros an hour to be on the internet.
Then we traveled the twisty turvey mountain roads in our rented Hyandai (go little car go!) through some really pretty country and villages. We found Napflio pretty easily (no, really, we did,) and found this internet cafe. We searched ourselves up a hostel/hotel called Hotel Economou. Sounds like economy, but is actually the owner's last name. Ironically, he's a real tightwad. Just kidding, a really sweet older couple owns the place. 25 Euro for a little double room and a private bathroom across the hall. I had a super hot shower last night, but apparently it wasn't hot enough for Max, who waited for the morning to try for his hot water. From the window in the hallway, you can see the Palamidi fortress, built during the Second Venetian Period (1686-1715.) I don't really know this stuff, I'm copying it from a brochure. We'll see that later today.
Behind me are a couple of greek townies playing backgammon...we've seen this in the streets all over.
Today we plan to see the sights around this town, do some laundry, and hit the beach. We had the option of traveling cross country to Olympia, then up to Delphi, but that we would have spent hours upon hours of driving, and the beach sounded more relaxing than the stressful mountain drive. We have to have the car back to Athens by Tuesday morning so we can get to the airport to leave Greece and discover Italy.
I'll try the picture thing again...wish me luck.
