Had another slight flight issue on the way to Argentina! It's key to check which airport you're flying out of. Arrived at the Brazilian Foz an hour before the flight and it was kinda from the Argentinian Foz. After some serious hurtling along, driver was crazy went off the road once, made it to the airport with three minutes to takeoff. Luckily in true south american style the flight was delayed by three hours so on we hopped!
Buenos Aires seems amazing. Every corner you turn has a different feel from the buildings to the people. Argentinian steak certainly lived up to its reputation on the first evening. Went to the most amazing steak restaurant, although not sure how happy and chef was when I asked for it to be done with no blood! The restaurant entrance was so cool with massive wood fires grilling the hugest cuts of meat ever that were just hanging from the ceiling.
On Saturday we went for a wander around the city, stopping for breakfast in the Cafe Tortoni which is the oldest cafe in Boneus Aires opened in 1858. We stepped through an old wooden door off a dirty street into the most spectacular ball like room with beautiful chandeliers and artwork from famous argentinian politicians and artisits. The waiters were all in tail and they even had Churros! (Sorry Chris didn't think they would survive the post)! We went to Plaze de Mayo where Evita's pink palace is and headed down to the newly converted docks. The old warehouses have been made into swanky apartments and restaurants, although taking in the atmosphere we went to Hooters for a drink as Tom had never been! We saw Buenos Aires very own Big Ben, Sydney Opera House and Washington Monument! Saturday night given the ridiculous cheap prices we enjoyed another awesome meal this time on the waterfront.
Sunday morning we went to a traditional little antiques market in the morning and then in the afternoon went to see River Plate play! The match was awesome with crazy fans at both ends. The home fans bouncing continuosly and congoing around the steepest stands ever. The away fans got increasingly stressed out as their goals poured in - resorting to ripping their seats out and throwing them over the barriers at the home fans below! There were 4 amazing goals out of 5, one where the player lobbed the goalie from a corner - and meant to!! The game made the front page the next day!
Monday we went to a awesome little area of the city called Boca. The houses are so cool, all painted in bright colours! They're literally all blue, red, yellow, orange! We also came across a live tango show in the street.
On Tueday we tried to go on a bike tour of the city but the rain that has pretty much plauged us for the rest of the week began. Instead we went up to the cementry where Evita is buried. It's an amazing place where each grave is a small house - with spectacular detailed decorations and quite freakly lots of cats wandering around. Best bit was definately me jogging along one of the mini little streets to get a better photo and a maintence man swinging open a tomb door to see what the noise was - never been sooo scared!! The rest of the afternoon was spent shopping!! Tom loved it. Wednesday night was football round two - this time Boca! The stadium was smaller but the atmosphere was awesome. The even more crazy fans were seated right beside us and chanted to music literally the entire game. Before the match started a group of the crazy fans paraded through the standing manic bit with massive flags and interestingly a couple of patio table umbrellas in the Boca team colours. The fans completely covered every spare space with team flags - scaling up big metal grates to tie them up. One guy got sent off and had to be escorted off the pitch by the police with big riot shields guarding him - the fans went mental - made us realise ust how scary they really can be!
Thursday the rain continued. The entire morning was spent attempting to identify what a post office is and where it is located. We rewarded ourselves with lunch in Cafe Tortoni! Then we went for a Tango lesson! I suprised myself at actually being able to remember the 8 basic steps and a forward and backward figure of eight! Oh yeah! Viks we are so taking this up in London!
Friday is better not mentioned! 6 hours spent attempting to collect a DHL parcel from the international airport (the one I get to go back to tomoz to fly from) when DHL in England told Mum it would be delivered to the hostel. Not in South America they have their own special little system that involves hundreds of bits of paper, different offices and being shouted at in Spanish whilst being shoved into different rooms! Really wouldn't recommend it - although does mean I have shoes for Patagonia. Toes are rather chilly in the rain here let alone the snow! Friday night we headed out to the Lonely Planet´s recommendation of a splurge steak restaurant - unfortunately after a ridiculous taxi ride into the middle of nowhere where we ran out of money and had to get out we couldn´t find the place so ended up in our favourite restaurant on the waterfront for the third time that week! Did mean the waiters who recognised us gave us free champagne though - and exctiting times I even tried some and wasn´t sick!
