Our Train from Puttaparthi left about 20:00 so we had arranged sleeping accommodation on the train for the 20 hr trip North to Jalgaon. The trip went smoothly and we arrived in Jalgaon refreshed. The Hotel Plaza where we stayed was within walking distance of the station so no haggling with dreaded rickshaw drivers was required. The Hotel was everything we had heard, the staff very friendly and helpful, the rooms immaculate and best of all very cheap!
We had a full day planned for our following and only day in Jalgaon so we crashed early to get a head start the next morning. The reason we had stopped at Jalgaon on our way to Agra and Dehli was to see the 2000+ year old Buddhist caves called the Ajanta Caves. They we a fair hike from town, around two hours and we had to take two buses and a rickshaw to get there.
It was worth the trip, the caves are magnificent - all man made, date back as far as 200BC and are all Temples or Monasteries for Buddhists. After the decline of Buddhism in India the temples were abandoned and gradually forgotten by the world. Until they were accidentally rediscovered by a British hunting party in 1819. Since then the caves have been re-excavated and due to the fact that they remained undiscovered for so long are brilliantly preserved with beautiful wall-paintings from 200AD still in perfect condition!
We spent the day exploring all the caves around 30 of them, some being simple square rooms carved into the cliff face to complex pillared antechambers with rooms running off and everywhere Buddha in statue or Stupa (the earliest representation of God - which looks a bit like an wide egg in an wide egg-cup).
After investigating all the Caves we tried to get back to Jalgaon to catch our 6pm train to Agra. We caught the first bus no problem but had to wait for what seem like ages at the next bus stop surrounded by touts hawking their wares and who it seemed had a customer shortage! We made it back to Jalgaon with only minutes to spare...
