Hey Guys,
Just thought we would give you a quick update on our time in Bangkok... this entry is going to be smaller we promise... well hopefully!!
So we arrived in bangkok after a long flight from Sydney at 11pm. As soon as we got outside we were hit by a wall of heat and jay's forehead started to glisten.. well maybe mine did too but I was carrying 20kg!! Quite anxious about what to expect regards transport rom the airport as we had read about many scams etc.. luckily however we found the local taxi queue sand were on our way in no time!! It's pretty amazing to see the chaos soon emege after leaving the airport.. 20ppl driving down the motorway on the back of a pick up and a whole families on mopeads is obv the done thing!!
Arrived at our hostel which seemed basic but nice... what can you expect in BK for 3pound a night!! Sleeping however in 30+degree heat with only a fan was damn hard!!
Next morning ready and raring to explore we set out for the skytrain to take us into Siam which is the central area with the posh shopping centres (with air/con) and the street markets with no a/c he he!! After about every 20mins of walking we had to go into a shop for the relief.. 7/eleven is our new best friend!! After wandering around for the majority of the afternoon we headed for Lumphini Park for a chill out and to watch the locals. After a cople of hrs of recharging (fpr me!!) we headed down to Sukhumvit Road (where you can find many lady boys and all things unsvaoury) for a quick bite before I was actually dead so we headed back to the hostel!! This day was a gentle intro into crazy bk!!
Next day we decided to try out local transport..... we jamp on the local non a/c bus to take us to the grand palace.. can you believe it was 14p each and we were on the bus about an hour!! Anyway jay's navigating wasn't up to speed as we got off about 30mins walk too early and I was not a happy bunny as my skirt was actually wet already from being on the bus!! Sexy hey!! Anyway we finally made it to the Grand Palace which was pretty spectacular ad worth the walk. The architecture was stunning with such intricate detail really was beautiful. We also saw Wat Phra Kaew which is home to the emerald buddha.. check out the pics really pretty!
So after a couple of hrs here we were quite hungry and v.v.v.v keen to sit down so we decided to try out the streey vendors!! 60p for rice and a curry and it was pretty damn good....!!
Next mode of transport... water taxi.. after a little while of trying to make some sense of the madness we managed to catch the right one and headed down to Wat Po (even got the ride forr free cos it was sooo packed...!!) which is famous for a 45mlong reclining buddha!! Pretty huge to say the least.!! Over to Wat Arun on another water taxi for 6p!! another major temple named after the indian god of dawn Aruna. I managed to climb the steeeeep steps to get a pretty impressive veiw of the reiver and BK! I was dead again so we headed back via water taxi... ealking.. bus.. walking (which didn't help!!) We were too tight to pay 1.60pound for a tuk tuk!! We were meant to go out after a little rest but I fell asleep!!
Next day to Chatuchak market which is pretty much a massive sunday market but with sweltering heat (can you tell I was struggling with the heat at this point) and quite a bit cheaper!! We wandered around the maze for a couple of hrs though before I gae in to an hr long foot massage which was amazing not only that it was for 3pounds but that I could sit down for that long!! Still eating from the vendors and still v.impressed. next onto chinatown!! We needed to get back to our hostel to catch the bus so decided to try out the tuk tuks which are notorious for trying to scam you and so he did. Took us down this side street and started saying about getting stamps and gasoline and one stop.. his english wasnt the best we told him to stop that we didn't want to go to any shops and just back to the hostel. So he told us that the price had now doubled..we told hin to go and luckily flagged down a taxi to get us out of there!! Anyway was a good experience.
So now at the bus stop after about 40mins of waiting it looked like it might rain a little.... and did it rain!! OH MY GOD!! We were trapped at a undershelter bus stop still getting soaked with no sign of our bus and the rain just getting heavier and the thunder getting louder.. After another 15mins or so we decided to cut our losses and head back to the hostel! We did make it to Chinatown but only in the evening when the storm had passed which was a shame as the markets weren't open :( Headed back to Sukumvit Road to check out Nana Plaza whcih is a real seedy area of Bk.. but worth checking out for 5mins..!!
NExt morning we were heading off to Cambodia so we were up n out at about 6.30 to get our bus and begin an unforgettable journey to cross the border to Cambodia....
....stay tuned for the next installment...:))
Sorry this one was alot longer than promised!!
Love you all...N & J xxxxx
