We leave the hotel this morning at about ten, nice and leisurely. Today is our shopping day in Wellington, we have the game tonight, and tomorrow we will do the touristy bits.
For breakfast, a bargain, $6 full breakfast at Murphy's. I'm not sure what it is with all the Irish bars here in Wellington.
After walking round for a short while, it's apparent that Wellington is a very different prospect to Nelson. It's a big city, sprawling off in a number of directions. We head down to the Waterside, and visit Te Papa museum, and then the rugby fanzine. Looking out across the water in one direction you can see the big high rise hotels, to another, the working port, where the ferry docked yesterday afternoon, and behind you, the shopping district
The museum is a great way to spend a few hours, and you will need it as it covers four floors and has an ever changing array of exhibitions.
When we are done there, we walk back through the city to the hotel and prepare for tonight's game. There is a free shuttle bus from outside the hotel that runs to the stadium every 10 minutes so we take that and get there about an hour before kick off.
The stadium here is very different to the one in Nelson. This is a permanent venue with a large capacity, as opposed to Nelson which had lots of temporary seating to increase capacity for big games.
Lots of Aussie fans in attendance as you would expect, and it looks like every New Zealander here has decided to support the USA, probably also to be expected. Their rule seems to be, support New Zealand and anyone who is playing Australia.
It's pretty much a full house, and our seats are towards the corner, behind the goal posts that Australia will defend in the first half.
The anthems start us off and the roof comes off the place with large and loud chants of USA, USA following theirs and boos following that of Australia
Austalia really start the game quickly and are up by two tries early, but arguably the biggest cheer of the night is when the USA score a try later in the first half.
The atmosphere is pretty loud through the whole game, which eventually ends with a big Australian win.
The organisation of the Rugby World Cup is amazing. We leave the stadium, wait less than 5 minutes and a shuttle bus is there, which, within 20 minutes, has dropped us back at our hotel.
