Time to see what Christchurch has to offer today. Our only full day here, so alarm clocks are set early, and we actually get up and out at a reasonable time! I think we impress even ourselves!
For breakfast, we have been recommended a place called Perrys, across the road from the college, but being a Sunday, we don't run into a cafe overcrowded with students, instead, a nice little place serving up good food at a great price.
Only when you get out on foot around the area are you able to take in just how much of the city is still in the 'red zone', the earthquake damaged area. The heart of the city really was taken out and will be this way for some time yet according to everyone we speak to.
So we start the walk around it, down towards the botanical gardens and the park, split in two by the river Avon. Punting on the Avon seems quite popular, especially in the morning sun, as does kayaking, with groups of three or four passing you every few minutes
We work our way round the park to the Fan Zone, set up for rugby fans to get together and watch the games, socialise and buy merchandise. A nice effort on the part of the organisers and we spend a couple of hours here before heading to a Local arts and crafts Market where Jade and wooden items are in abundance, and then across the road to the Canturbury Museum. The museum is worth a look in, covering everything from the history, and pre history of the region, to more current displays, such as a photographic exhibition of All Black legends.
There are two matches on tonight, so we make our way back to the hotel and off to the Fitzgerald again to take in the atmosphere. The first game up is England v Georgia, where the result doesn't necessarily mean the performance was good, but a win is a win. The bar empties a little after this game and we make our own exit, choosing to watch France v Canada from the hotel while packing, as tomorrow is a travel day and will involve another early start.
