We left Playa Del Carmen at 6.30am to catch the 7.10am ADO bus to Tulum only to find the bus we wanted didn't exist! So we got a taxi to Tulum ready to meet our dive guide at 8.30am for some Cenote Diving.
Once we got our gear all kitted up we left for the Angelita Cenote (see pic), oh my god this dive ranks in our top 3 all time favourite dives! It's absolutely magical (yet disorientating!). We had to walk a short distance through the jungle to the Cenote and after a 2 metre jump with our equipment we descended through freshwater, a mystical layer sulphur cloud (which also smells like rotten eggs!) with a 'floating tree island' and through saltwater in the darkness to 42m. Once we got into the saltwater we had to get our torches out and it was then we could see the tree roots.
Obviously when we finished we were both on a high and eager to do our next dive at Cenote Aktun Ha (aka the Carwash!). Helen asked why it was named the Carwash and it appears the Cenote was previously used for washing taxi cabs next to the highway until they realised they could make more money from divers! Again, this dive was surreal as it was like an underwater lily garden with lots of Cichlids and we penetrated the cave system as our guide felt we were experienced enough (we should be by now....or we would have been offended!) We had a good twenty minutes in the caves and as daylight could not penetrate the caves, it was a little eerie.
When we finished we headed to our hostel which was impossible to find as there was no signage, We then spent the afternoon walking all over Tulum, it's a town on a highway so you're not missing much here but there are reasons to visit Tulum.
After an awkward nights sleep (the fan hardly worked!), we both (or rather Helen) decided that we have had enough of being on the road and changed our plans so that we could go back to LA a week early i.e the next day. Talk about last minute plans! We managed to change our flight and booked a nights stay in Cancun.
Once our plans were confirmed, we headed to Tulum's beach. Tulum is all about the beach and my god, it's stunning! Aquamarine seas and white beaches so we sunbathed for a couple of hours taking regular breaks to dip into the warm ocean. Nick managed to find a bar to watch the first set of Murray's US open final.
We then picked up our bags and caught a bus to Cancun.
