Being the shopaholics that we are, no trip to Vietnam was going to be complete without some retail therapy and where better to indulge than in Hoi An with literally hundreds of tailors and cobblers fighting over who will get to make you custom made clothes and shoes! We indulged and set upon a stream of browsing through catalogues of styles, warehouses of materials and having every inch of our bodies measured all in search of the perfect item of clothing! And in the end we are now the proud owners of suits, tops, shirts and shoes which are fitted perfectly to us! Oh course we got to see them all for about an hour before we shipped them off on the long journey around the world (taking about 4 months apparently) and homewards.
Hoi An is a really pretty little town with tiny streets and the riverside filled with shops and restaurants with brightly coloured lanterns outside.Aside from shops there are also a few bustling markets selling everything you can imagine including lots of weird and wonderful food.Lots of Buddhist temples and old Vietnamese houses are also scattered about, I'm afraid shopping took up most of our time, but we did manage to visit My Son temple.
My Son is the ruins of an ancient Champa civilisations holy places, set out in the jungles and the hills outside Hoi An.The Champa started building My Son in the 8th century having come from Java and it must have been a really impressive temple complex but unfortunately the wars Vietnam has suffered as well as the fact that the temples have been overgrown by the jungle for hundreds of years have left them in a bad state. The buildings that remain are lovely and some of the carvings of a female God, Sherva, and animals are really something and the location with the temples overgrown with trees and bushes is really spectacular.
