Copacabana is a small town right on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The lake is so clear and blue - very inviting except for the fact that we are still at 3500metres above sea level thus the temperatures are still a little nippy!
We stopped here to get across to Isla del Sol an island about 50km by boat from Copacabana. We did however get told about the sunset from the top of Cerro Calvario. This is a steep climb for about 30mins, past the 14 stations of the cross, to get a great view over the lake and the town at sundown. So we naturally ran up there (very slowly) and took in the scenery. Copacabana also has an amazing Moorish style cathedral, all white with orange and green roof tiles.
After what might have been the slowest boat ride in history we reached the north end of the island. We were accosted by a local guide and herded to the museum to buy tickets for the walk. After a cursory glance at the room that was the museum we set off toward the north tip of the island. We were stopped a couple of times as the guide tried in vein to explain what we were looking at, but sensing a losing battle we carried on by ourselves to explore and make up our own stories. The island is covered in terraces of crops from the top to the shore.
The north end of the island was the birth place of the Incan Gods and thus the
civilisation. The walk was about 8 to 10 km from the north end to the south. Only after walking about 3km did we discover in true Bolivian fashion that they had three borders on this island and at each we were expected to pay for walking on their part of the walkway! I have now christened the Boliovian people ´Banditios´! Now this didn´t sit well as we were told the entrance at the start would cover the whole walk - so Nic got angry - I love it when she gets angry, Spanish sentences fly out and she always wins!! All I have to do is stand around looking displeased and looking down on these very small people :).
The walk itself was great and well worth a nice day in the sun. The walk finishes with the Incan steps and fountain leading down to the port which is really beautiful. We stayed on the island to take in the sunset from a different location for our last day in Bolivia before heading to Peru.
