After a restful (but very active) time in Cancún we were ready for our 15 day tour driving from Cancun upto Mexico City.
The first stop was Playa Del Carmen which was similar to Cancun, but more built up and less beautiful (in my opinion). After some time on the beach we met with our group (12 in total) which includes a manic Irish solicitor who is like Dennis the menace and a English lady who has fallen in love with a Mexican (and is going to move here and marry him) after only spending 55 hours with him (she has countered!!). We all met for a huge dinner, they are all really cool people.
After Playa we headed to Tulhum, Maya ancient ruins built on a mountain on the beach – very beautiful! I can’t tell you much about the actual ruins though as walking there my flip flop broke and me and Katy had to go get new ones so we missed the tour guide! The swim at the end was much appreciated though as it was 38degress and very humid!
After leaving Tulhum we headed to another Maya ruin called Chichen Itza (chickhen pizza to me and Katy). These ruins were much bigger and this time we had a guide! It was surprisingly interesting to me and he told us some incredible information – the whole place is built at certain angles so that sunlight gets into the buildings at certain times of the day and twice a year shadows form on the main building to form the shape of a snake (which is what they worshiped).
The nest town was Merida, a very friendly little town with lots of traditional cafes and Market stalls which we explored. There was not too much to do there so we did a day trip to these incredible underground spring water caves which you can go and swim in. We had to get the dodgiest transport!! Wooden carts that were pulled along on (very thin and old) tracks by horses! Once inside these beautiful caves we did lots of diving and jumping (which I found nearly as scary as the carts) it was great fun and at times breathe taking.
Planque was our next stop, a very proud jungle town! After walking around for 3 hours at even more ruins (getting bored of them now) I was tempted to go back to the cabins (which were in the jungle by the way!! The first right was especially scary as there was a thunder storm and I swear I heard dinosaurs out there) when we were done but I was hard core and decided to carry on for a few more hours and 4 of us followed the guide into the actual jungle! It was incredible! Saw so many beautiful birds and plants but the best bit was seeing monkeys hanging from the trees above us (thought one may drop on my head!) and walking down a waterfall. Back at the cabins I sat nice and soggy as we chilled (right to de core) to a very good Mexican musician and then some fire throwers!
That’s it for now, we still have half the trip left – really excited about Mexico City as were going to be there for the day of the dead, a huge festival over here. Much love to you all and your hear again from me very soon! x
