After Surfers our next stop was Bryon Bay. We didn't actually do much in Bryon. We got there on a Sunday and most things were closed or booked up so we did a lot of wondering around, seeing some random things like barefoot dancers in the street. On the Monday we did a day trip to Nimbin, which is a little hippie town and its like stepping back into the 70s. We met a local called Paul who wears nail polish and collects trees!! We tried some of the local cookies and were in bed by 6pm - enough said about Bryon really! We missed Cheeky monkeys, the lighthouse and the art house which was a bit stupid of us!!
After Bryon we headed to Arrawarra beach, which is a Mojo Surf Camp for our two day course. We gracefully put on our wet suits, grabbed a board and headed to the beach for our first lesson! I never realised how complicated surfing can be, there's all types of things to remember and many steps to take before you can actually manage to get on the board and surf, your feet have to be positioned perfectly! We spent some time on the sand having a lesson then we headed into the water. It was so hard!! But I was so determined, as much as I was wrinkly and ingested a hell of a lot of salt water I did not get out of the water until they kicked me out as I knew if I kept practising I would manage to catch a wave and surf but after 2 hours I was dragged out. In the evening we had a massive BBQ and had some extra guests in the form of Possums! The second day we got up at 6.45am for our second lesson. Was quite something stretching out on the beach that early surrounded by surf boards. This was my last chance to surf so this day I gave it my all, listening carefully to the instructor and concentrating on the waves and you know what? After my 4 hours of trying I did it!! I actually caught a wave and surfed it! I thought I was going to piss myself with excitement but you're not allowed to pee in your wetsuits so I held it in! Was such a good feeling when I finally managed to surf, and once I knew I could do it I was much more confident and managed to surf a few more waves.
After the exhaustion of surf camp (my muscles certainly got a wake up) we loaded back on the bus and headed to Barrington Tops. Barrington is a little farm in the middle of nowhere with kangaroos skipping around and possums everywhere. We chilled there all day and night, in a metal shack which was quite scary when there was a thunder and lightening storm! Was a really good night just playing cards and eating homemade pizza. In the morning we made our way to Sydney, getting geared up for Christmas and New Year and looking forward to spending a few weeks in one place.
