We Landed in Siem Reap, Cambodia on the 18th and felt like we were famous. We were hounded by about 10 taxi drivers all yelling for our custom! In the end we followed this guy to his tuk tuk and he took us to a fab little guest house. In fact we stayed with this driver for the whole 2 days we were in Siem Reap. He took us to the highest point for sunset (admitedley with about 300 other tourists). Unfortunately it was too cloudy to see the sun but it was worth the trip and the climb for the view. We ended up going to a traditional Cambodian buffet with a dance show afterwards which was good. The Cambodian people were so friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Siem Reap was a beautiful city and I really loved it there. They lit up the river at night and it looked so pretty. The following day our driver took us on a tour of the other big temples the area is famous for. It was an early start though so we could get to Angkor Wat for Sunrise. Again, too cloudy to see the sun though - damn! The temples we saw were amazing and it's incredible to think they were built by hand so many hundreds of years ago. They really felt quite magical when you walked through the ruins. Flippin hot though, the temperatures have just been on the up and up sine we started travelling southwards!
The following day we caught a bus to the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. The main reason for our quick visit here was to see the Killing Fields, the site involved with the Cambodian Genocide. It was quite an intense trip and none of us felt like we could take any photos of the site where a huge number of mass graves were found and a monument containing some 9000 human skulls has been erected to honor the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. It was quite a peacful site but when our guide told us details of what happened there, especially to the children it was just horrible. You can still see bones coming to the surface of the floor you walk on. It was hard going, and sorry if you didn't want so much detail, but I'm glad we went. It's a lovely country with such a sad history and you can't visit it without learning about what happened there. The day after we went to the S-21 site, the prison, now a museum, where the victims were kept before being taken to the killing fields. That again was really hard and we felt quite drained after being there and hearing about the awful things that happened.
But on a lighter note, Phnom Penh was a crazy city! So busy, it actually felt more hectic than Bangkok. Quite a dirty place but full of character! And beggars and brothels but that's another story!
And so came an end to our whistle stop tour of Cambodia! We flew back to Bangkok on the 21st and it felt good to be back! I really liked Bangkok and felt sad when we left yesterday. We couldn't leave though without experiencing a Ping Pong show. I'll not explain the details. If you want to know what it is - google it!! Needless to say, it was an eye-opening experience, very random, but very funny!!!! Te he!
So now you find me just feet away from paradise sands and warm waters on the Thai Island of Koh Pangan. We are spending 3 days here before hopping over to another couple of the islands over the next week or so. A chance for us to take in all of our South East Asia experiences, and have a few more (going to the Black Moon Party tomorrow night!), as well as to recharge the batteries and top up the tan before we head off to the land of Oz. So excited!!!
Hope you enjoyed these last updates, sorry if I waffled a lot on this one. It's been quite a hectic couple of weeks as you can probably tell. Actually I think we hit a bit of brick wall - travellers burn out! So it feels really good to be here on the beautiful islands having a much needed rest! I know, I can hear your hearts bleeding out of sympathy for me! But it's really hard you know - having the time of your life!!
Well, I'm off now folks. As always, hope everyone is ok back home.
Take care and speak soon
Lots of love
Nic
