We didn't do too much in Koh Samui. It was still raining the day after we got there and our room had a DVD player in it so we watched dodgy copies of 'Hangover II', 'The Golden Compass' and 'The Terminator'. We also sorted out the boring things, like our laundry and booking up our transfer to Koh Phangan. On the third day we woke up to sunshine - finally - so we beat a path to the beach and stayed there until the sun went down.
On the 5th we caught the 1pm ferry to Koh Phangan. It was seriously overcrowded and we had to sit on the floor at the top of a staircase, which is a really stupid place to sit and made us immediate enemies of anyone wanting to come up or go down. Fortunately it only took 45 minutes to make the crossing.
Koh Phangan is meant to be beautiful and rustic in parts but we are staying about 20m from the beach where the infamous Full Moon Party takes place so it is crazily loud at our hostel and not at all rustic. When we're attempting to sleep in our hard-as-hell beds we might as well be lying on the dance floor in a nightclub, next to the speakers. Luckily drinks are served by the bucket here rather than by the glass, which makes it somewhat easier to sleep through the music that goes on until 7am.
The first night we each drank the free bucket our hostel provides us with (this sounds generous but it's only fair considering how much we're paying for our room!) before heading to a pool party at the Coral Bungalows. I made friends with a bunch of Kiwi girls and convinced them that they all wanted to go for a swim, even if they were wearing mismatched sagging underwear that they never thought would see the light of day. It was so much fun that I didn't even care that my hair was soaked and that my wet bikini bottoms were leaking through my denim shorts. We ended up on the full moon beach dancing on the tables and generally having a good time, except for now and then when Jak would randomly bust out some dance moves from 'The Inbetweeners Movie' and I had to pretend not to know him. He must have been smashed as he threw up into his half-finished bucket when we got back, and again the next morning. I was feeling delicate too so we took it easy and just went to Leela Beach for a bit of a sunbathe yesterday before retiring for a nap.
Last night we played ring of fire at the hostel, armed with our free vodka buckets. I thought I had drawn the fourth King and had to drink a potent mix of sambucca, tequila and vodka. After downing it successfully we realised that we were only three Kings down and that there had been no need for me to drink the filth at all. Afterwards we just had fun dancing on the beach again. There were more people than the night before and more people covered in fluorescent paint and/or jumping over skipping ropes on fire and getting burnt. Not long now until the 8th January and the official Full Moon Party when there should be about 30,000 people here. I hope our livers hold out until then...
