Found a computer with internet! Finally! It won't let me select our actual location (Malolo Island, Fiji) on this website but that's where we are right now.
The backpackers' hostel on the first Fijian island we stayed at (Mana) was very basic: cold hosepipes for showers, no electricity between 2am and 6pm, no TV, no sun loungers etc. I thought I'd hate it but it was great; our room was in the middle of village so it felt like a slice of real Fiji. There were about 15 backpackers staying there including several Londoners and by the end of our time there it felt like we were one big family.
On our first night the hostel held a party to celebrate the 51st birthday of a guest who had been sleeping in a hammock on the beach for almost a month. The theme of the night, for reasons unknown to any of us, was cross-dressing. All the lads thought it was hilarious to play at being girls and kept discussing their periods, boys and how much they liked cleaning and cooking. We worked our way through 40 litres of punch and finished the night by watching a fire show on the beach.
We were very lazy the next day: all we did was dig a giant hole in the sand. The Fijian children immediately copied us, cackling wildly all the time and sneaking closer to watch us work then running back to their hole screaming with laughter whenever we looked up. Perhaps they were laughing because they were knew what we did not: that our beach hot tub would be eaten up and destroyed by the tide within a couple of hours without actually filling up first.
The next day was overcast so Jak and I went exploring. We found lots of tiny shells, which I made into a bracelet, and dozens of hermit crabs. After lunch we had a lesson where we learnt to count and say key phrases in Fijian. In the evening there was a Fijian quiz (we won!) before we were introduced to the potent 'Mana Mix' (rum, coke and God knows what else). The Mana Mix was a mistake: the next day was a complete write-off as I had the Hangover from Hell and couldn't move too far without wanting to throw up or actually throwing up :-(
On Tuesday we jumped on a boat for Walu Beach Resort at Malolo Island. The rooms here are a definite step up. We are ridiculously excited about the hot showers and keep finding excuses to head back to the room for a wash. Outside our room there are two oversized hammocks and just beyond that the beach starts. Unfortunately the mosquitos also seem to find our Bure extremely attractive; on the first day we must have killed at least 15 mozzies in our bathroom alone. We don't feel bad about it though as we have still both been eaten alive.
On Wednesday we kayaked to an tiny unihabited island and around the bay, marvelling at the amazing coral and fish beneath us. That makes us sound quite sporty but that was the most exercise we have done on this island apart from the occasional attempt to play Volleyball by Jak. The rest of the time we've spent here since then has been fairly unproductive; we've literally just been reading, sunbathing, paddling in the sea and eating. It's been fantastic - the days are literally blurring into one and we are definitely operating on 'Fiji Time'. My blood pressure must be dangerously low :-D Today we move on to our third and final Fijian island: Bounty Island.
