Arrived into Nice at 6.30pm after being trapped after a collision on the freeway. The freeways are great until something goes wrong!!
Steph met us at the hotel, after offloading our luggage, we parked our car in the nearby car park. It was great to see my gorgeous girl again Over dinner Steph gave us a run down of her travels from Paris, Spain and Portugal. Steph flew in from Lisbon the previous evening and will travel with us to Perpignan, France. Steph will then meet up with a friend in Barcelona before flying into Athens.
The following morning we traveled to Monaco, the scenery on the way is short of spectacular, a definity must on anyone's travel itinerary. We visited the casino, housed in a magnificent building, the pebble beach, where Steph went in for a dip and Leigh was peeved he hadn't bought along his togs to go for a swim!! Never mind, next time. We walked up to the Royal Castle and saw the sentry march up and down before retreating back to his post. In an unusual event I would have thought, a young girl clowning around with her brother had pulled up her dress and flashed her undies at the guard as he was parading towards her. In a booming voice the guard shouted a short sharp "STOP" while continuing without an interruption to his performance. Very impressive, it did the trick.
We wandered around the narrow streets of Palace area and perused the spectacular views below of the luxury boats in the marina. This area we found out is restricted to residents and palace vehicles We were stopped by a police guard before entering the area by car, and asked if we had special permission papers. Of course we didn't so we parked our car in the underground car park and walked up the steep walk way which would once upon the time would have been the main entrance gates to the Palace. The Grimaldi family acquired (conquered) the palace from the Genoise empire and his family have reigned ever since.
We got back to our hotel at around 9 pm, cleaned up and headed into the restaurant area of Nice for dinner. Tomorrow we move down the coast.
