May 7th (Thursday) - Day 67 - Cairns (Cape Tribulation)
After 4 nights in the same place it was horrid to have to pack up. We met our tour group at half 7 and spent a painful 90 minutes on the bus while they picked others up. Once we had everyone we drove a few hours up north to the Barron river, via a little stop over point that had a million mosquitoes. This stop was a river cruise of the Barron river. A salt water slash fresh water river where you could see all kinds of wildlife namely crocodiles. We saw 3 crocs mainly under the water as it was high tide and during the rest of the 45 minutes we saw a few exotic birds and snakes. Our next stop was a walk through the jungle. We saw some weird and wonderful plants/creatures unique to this part of the world including a huge dragon like lizard and a massive bird that looked like an Emu. We then finished the first part of the trip in Cape Tribulation. This is one of the only places in the world were the rain forest meets the sea. Our accommodation was slightly out of town but deep in the forest. Once we had checked in we took a walk down to the beach to see what all the fuss was about. It was so amazing to see a rainforest 5 metres from the sea. In fact a number of trees had learnt how to grow on the beach so at high tide the trees were surrounded by sea. Such an odd sight. We went off on a 2 hour walk along the coast looking at all the flora and forna. We ended up in the town and realised it was getting dark so walked back really fast. By this time the tide was well up the beach and it was like seeing another world to the one we had seen a few hours previously. That evening we sat outside listening to all the sights and sounds of the rainforest. It was so hot and humid.
May 8th (Friday) - Day 68 - Cairns (Cape Tribulation) - My Mum's 50th
It was weird hearing it rain all night right outside the window - it was so loud. That morning we only had a few hours until the bus picked us up so we had our free breakfast and went for a walk on the beach. We walked to the other end of the cape before returning to met our bus. On the way back we stopped at a look out point over looking the Daintree river delta followed by crossing the river on a ferry. We then stopped at a gorge. Next we had an hour to wander around Port Douglas and seeing some of the 5000 dollar art. We then had a really nice ice cream milkshake which was about a trillion calories before returning home. That evening we sat and planned where we want to go on the east coast (over some beers of course). Then at 3am I had to wake up to catch the UK to call my mum and wish her happy birthday - however in the sleepy process I put my phone on the sink which had 1 mil of water on it and now my phone does not work!
