Once again, I've got rather slack. The constant hunt to get Internet over here doesn't help!
I found Perth a strange town. It was a bit too squeaky clean if you know what I mean, it was all new build and struggled to hold much charm and culture. I spent one day graffiti hunting around the centre and then spent the afternoon relaxing in the sun in Kings park, complete with a stunning view over the city. Luckily I arrived as the fringe opened, so each evening I went to see a random show - the first a play taking the mic out of the perils of online dating and the second a selection of comedians. Safe to say brits don't get Aussie humour....
From Perth we flew across the country to Melbourne. I don't think we really thought about the flight when we booked the trip, we took off at 10 30pm for the 3 1/2 hour flight, however due to the 3 hour time difference we didn't end up landing until 5am... Tash worked out how to get into town without having to use the skybus and we rocked up to our hostel at 7 30. As I'm sure you can all imagine I was the poster girl for a morning person. We couldn't check in until 1pm, but the hostel had a movie room filled with bean bags that we napped in for most of the morning.
Our first day was a bit of a write-off, but we had 6 nights in total - so plenty of time to explore. Melbourne was much nicer than Perth, being the old capital it was full of character and had little districts like China town - holding an epic dumpling house Tash took me too on our last evening. The most interesting trip I made was too the immigration museum, it was fascinating to see all the old rules - how they prevented anyone but white Europeans immigrating until 1970 by putting in place a grammar test started to explain the lack of multicultural society in quite a lot of the west. Days were spent with trips to St Kilda, Phillip Island (PENGUIN PARADE!) and seeing sights like Victoria market. After the long trip on the west coast it was nice to have a more relaxed week taking in the city sites.
