On Monday morning we caught the 3rd class northern train up to the historical town of ayutthaya. Getting the bus to the station, train and tuk tuk to the 1301 hostel was only 100 baht for both of us, rather cheaper than the 200 baht pp minibuses everyone else seemed to opt for.
The hostel was the most expensive we've done so far as there were only 2 in the city, but our £7 gave us a beautiful dorm room by the river.
After dumping bags we went for a wander and accidentally ended up making our way around all the ancient temple ruins. Getting impressively lost thanks to our useless map and map skills on the way to the laying Buddha we ended up in a back street market which had the tastiest chicken ever (win!).
We didn't make it around all the temples, but headed back to the hostel and met a small group before heading out to the night market for dinner. We were still a bit cautious about market food but tried random fried fish balls, amazing rice and pork and Tash had a very random Thai omelette.
