We arrived in Portugal 3 days ago where we made the Algarve Coast, specifically the small town of Ohlos d'Agua outside of Albufeira (2 sets of photos attached) our home.
After checking into our hotel, and seeing the room was just too small, we upgraded to a "suite". It's a 3 star hotel near one of the prettiest beaches, Maria Luisa, and has a pool. It's rated #1 on trip advisor for this area, but I wouldn't rave about it - only that the hotel staff is the nicest we've met.
We spent the first afternoon in Albufeira checking out the town, then checked out the beaches. Back at our hotel, we waded in the pool and then went for dinner at a great local restaurant nearby recommended to us by one of the guys, Jose, at the hotel.
I had grilled swordfish for $12!!! and it was excellent, Mary Kay had grilled sardines (see pictures) one of their specialties, Rosemary had veal sirloin. All excellent and alot cheaper than Spain.
MK & RR drank and had fun with the bar tenders back at the hotel, MK has a whole story about that ---- later.....
Next day we had a relaxing beach day (YEAH) at Maria Luisa beach. Just kicked back, slept, swam in the ocean.
We met some fun Brits in the ocean (this place is covered in British people) - dad and son. They were asking us about Arnold and Maria having heard we are from CA. But we had not heard the news about Arnold's love child with the maid, so they told us the story. needles to say, we were a little shocked to learn about it, but not too surprised, knowing his past.
At night back to Albufeira where Rosemary and I split a shellfish stew that consisted of spiny lobster, alot of shrimp, mussels, cockles, and clams. We met a sweet Brazilian guy, Lucas, that worked at the restaurant, Rosemary invited him to come live with her (he's about 20)Got back late, the town is wild at night with tons of discos and bars everywhere.
Yesterday we spent toddling around the Algarve Coast by car. First we went to the town of Lagos and after shopping a bit, we took a boat ride along the rugged coast line, which was great (see photos). Then we drove to Salema, a sleepy picturesque village and had lunch on the water at Atlantico. More swordfish, excellent. Then off to the End of the World (what most of Europe thought was the end of the world before sailors sailed off to explore new worlds). Cape Sagres is the eastern most point in all of Europe. Saw a film, climbed around the fort and went by the town.
On our way back to the hotel, we stopped at an artist shop and bought some stuff, then at a great local pottery place where everything was hand made and couldn't resist picking up a few things.
Spent our last night here back in Albufeira for more fish and shopping. Our waiter's were great once again, and so much fun. Everyone here is very friendly.
It's much cooler here along the coast.
Today is Monday (Happy Memorial Day) and we are off to Lisbon, but will stop in several places along the way. MORE LATER.
