My Patronus is a Plane
Today was our last day in San Francisco, so we decided to visit the iconic tourist attractions. First on the list was of course, the Golden Gate Bridge. As a civil engineer, I am obsessed with bridges and the Golden Gate is one of my most favourites. With its bright red structures, it stands proudly among the misty skies of San Fran, as if it knows it was the longest spanning bridge when it was originally built. First, we drove across on the bridge, and I believe that was much more marvelous than seeing it from the ground. Its cables tower above your head as the mist slowly reveals more and more of the bridge while driving along. This, coupled with the gloriously scenic mountains surrounding the other side was an awe-inspiring sight. After crossing over, we were in the quaint little city of Sausalito. What a great view you would have every day if you lived there. We turned around to head back to San Francisco at a little enclosed beach bay. With the sun beating down, the picturesque place looked warm and relaxing. The people of Sausolito sure have it good! After we were back in San Francisco, we drove to Crissy Fields which is a park where many go to get a great view of the bridge. Unfortunately, the mist was densely packed this afternoon, so we could not get a good view of the entire bridge, except for its span. This was kind of a disappointment as it was the main attraction I had been looking forward to on this trip, but it was still awesome to just be there all together. The park itself was littered with giant red structures, showcasing the steel that was used to build the bridge. From there, we headed towards Nob Hill to see the famous cable cars and the iconic steep streets that define the undulated city. En route there, we stumbled upon Lombard Street, the popular curvy and steep street that is a major tourist attraction. We had talked about driving down this but had totally forgotten about doing so, so it was a wonderful 'accident' to have come across it. We drove around to the top of the hill and waited our turn to go down. Lined with adorably quaint houses on either side and brilliantly colourful flowers, the descend to the bottom of the street took a total of 3 minutes. We felt like celebrities because everyone on foot was taking pictures of those driving down. It's interesting to know that we may be featured in a random person's Instagram photo or YouTube video! From here, we drove up and down the steeps and observed the breathtaking view from the top of the roads. My dad's driving skills were definitely tested as he struggled to maneuver up against gravity. Some of the roads were so steep, in fact, that the sidewalks were steps instead of pavement! After our adventures of driving around, we decided to head to Chinatown to have dinner. After searching on my phone, we chose to go to a Vegetarian restaurant called Enjoy Vegetarian... very original name. While I was excited to see the menu with all of my favourite Chinese dishes (General Tso's chicken, Kung Pao chicken etc.) in vegetarian form, the food we ordered was actually pretty average. The Wanton Noodle Soup that my dad ordered was delicious, as were the pea sprouts that my mom ordered, but the Mapo tofu that my mom also ordered tasted like medicine. My Kung Pao chicken was pretty good, though. After dinner, we drove around a little more through Japan town before heading back to our hotel. It has been a good three days here in this gorgeous city and I am sad to be leaving tomorrow. I definitely hope to come back to this beautiful place when it's a bit warmer and just immerse myself in it.
