After another short stint on the high speed catamaran we arrived on Koh Phangan. We had gone there to experience one of the parties the island is famous for. Although our timing was a bit off for a Full Moon Party, we had timed it perfectly to coincide with a Half Moon Party. We had allowed ourselves enough time to get some sleep, get up and go to the party, then have a good nights sleep and be on the next boat out of there.
We had been warned it was not a place to hang around.
The party itself was great fun. The only way I can describe it is as a mini Glastonbury dance field filled with a combination of over enthusiastic backpackers and ageing hippies dancing to the worst techno you can imagine.
Tom and Sarah left early (well, they were in bed for 3:00am) as Tom's (still infected) foot decided to throw a tantrum and explode everywhere, while Laura and the boys kept the party going until after 5:00am with the other lunatics.
The next day turned out to be the real story from Koh Phangan.
We woke up and checked out where the hotel told us that we hadn't paid for some drinks which Tom knew he had paid for. He politely pointed this out, but they insisted he hadn't and asked who he had paid. He said it was a man, but couldn't remember who - maybe one of the guys that worked there called Alex. Either way, we paid the bill again to avoid creating a scene and went out for lunch.
On our return, Alex was waiting. He came straight up to Tom and started asking why he had said that he'd paid him. Tom politely said that he mentioned his name, but wasn't sure.
Next thing he knew, Alex had slapped Tom square across the face.
This put us in a very strange position. The police on Koh Phangan are definitely corrupt and hate the tourists who come and mess up their island. Also, Alex was clearly on drugs and had what could only be described as a "wild" look in his eyes. Not to mention a kitchen full of staff waiting for the westerner to throw a punch so they could lynch him. There wasn't really much that could be done to diffuse the situation. Through gritted teeth, we picked up our bags and walked away, ignoring the abuse being shouted behind us.
The rest of the day was spent waiting for the boat to Koh Samui while discussing what had happened earlier. It didn't seem real looking back, but it actually happened.
Just a friendly note to everyone - avoid Sea Gate Resort on Koh Phangan. They get violent if you question your bill.
It should also be noted that Tom wasn't harmed during this altercation as he his double hard.
