The journey to Luang Prabang would cause even the sturdiest stomach to churn slightly. It took us 7 hours to get there, with one reluctant stop for some food and the roads were the windiest you could ever imagine. At one point poor Laura had her head out the window trying to be sick, I'd imagine the locals see this a lot! However, it was possibly one of the most beautiful journeys you could imagine. The scenery is out of this world, which definitely made the journey more worth while. Its difficult to think why people would ever fly to destinations like these when you have such a chance to see real life.
We arrived late on in the day all feeling a little worse for wear. We went straight out to investigate transports back to Thailand. Unfortunately we quickly found this was going to be a 22 hour bus, not something you want to hear once you've just got off another bus. So after a temper tantrum from Sarah, we quickly decided to head for dinner. Thankfully a few glasses of wine later, we decided it wasn't actually that bad! Just a bit rubbish.
For our first proper day in Luang Prabang we decided to head for a tour around the city. For those of you who don't know, Luang Prabang is a world heritage site. Its another city which seems to be in the middle of nowhere and consists of mainly temples. We decided to just wander around and see what we found. This took us down a muddy bank and to a random bamboo bridge. The bridge went over a river and on the other side was a little village. We wandered around and as always found some curious children who loved running up to us and shouting 'Hello', then screaming and running away. Even in touristy places the kids find us hilarious.
After our time in the village we wandered back into town and went into some temples. We cannot count how many temples we have seen now, but thankfully they are pretty beautiful. That night we went on a walk around the night market and found a little food street. Here we met up with Ramon and Danielle and decided the next day we would head off to a nearby waterfall together.
The waterfalls turned out to be a lot more beautiful than we thought they would be. There we lots of them and you could swim in the pools. It was such a lovely day just chilling and swimming around even though the water was absolutely freezing!
That evening we headed up Phu Si hill. This is a temple on top of the hill in the centre of the city where you can watch the sunset over the mountains. It was packed with tourists but luckily the weather was with us so the sunset was lovely. We then headed out for dinner with various people we had met while in Laos for a few drinks. There ended up being 14 of us, which seemed to confuse the staff of a local bar as they worked out how to seat us all.
For our final day we decided to hire bikes and head off around the city again. Luang Prabang is so beautiful, its surrounded by mountains and is the most peaceful place we have been. We were really sad to be leaving so quickly but we made the decision to spend New Years Eve in Bangkok so we have a deadline to keep. Laos is definitely a place worth visiting, just don't expect too much from the transport. The more time in each place the better!
