Come Rain or Shine
The show must go on whatever the weather and this is very much a tale of two weather patterns. We were told to expect that the South Island could offer 4 seasons and to be prepared for it. Well, it's a good job that we did!!
Let's start with Spring...... We awoke Saturday morning and used the wifi at the camp to assure family we are still alive before heading off towards the Abel Tasman National Park on the North West of the South Island. There was a crispness in the air, a dew on the grass but the sun was out and the day was beautiful. We made our way to xxxxxxxxxx, the gateway to the coastal region of the park and arrived at the beach and adorned hoodies before hiring a couple of kayaks for a few hours to explore. The water of the sea and the beaches were stunning and we slowly paddled our way against the waves to Split Apple Rock, a huge circular shaped rock in the sea split in half by Zeus according to legend. We circled the rock and took our photo's, Neil then did his masculine thing of feeling the need to climb any obstacle put infront of him before we headed to the nearest beach for a bite of lunch.
Summer........ It was now about midday and it was now baking hot so we ditched the clothes and resorted to kayaking in swimming gear which resulted in 2 things..... Firstly, a girly yelp (from both of us) whenever the cold sea water splashed you and secondly...... Sunburn!!!! We returned to the kayak centre ahead of schedule and was offered the chance to play with 'paddle boards' for free so took up the challenge. Neil did so and was a complete natural and found it very very easy. Any footage that may emerge of him continually falling off should be treated as superimposed nonsense.
