23rd November
Flew into KL today from Thailand. We were sad to say goodbye to Thailand but ready to explore a new Country. As soon as we landed in Malaysia we noticed that it was very different from anywhere we had been before. When we arrived we met a lovely Indian guy who gave us the lowdown on culture, food etc. We arrived at our hostel eventually to what can only be described as a cupboard, and not a clean one. Stained bed sheets and floors.......excellent. We quickly left the room and went out for dinner.
24th November
The worst night sleep in the worst hostel yet. The hostel room is a lime green hell hole with a bed in it. We climbed into our liners and lay wishing we were somewhere else. Not only were we scared of the creepy hostel owner coming into our room, but also of the bedbugs that we had read about in the reviews......note to self, do not read reviews when you are lying in the bed of the hostel.....stupid idea. We checked the bed at 2am for roughly 30 mins in our search for bed bugs (the thought makes me want to vomit) and lay giggling about another story we could add to the blog! Bloody dump! In the moring we got ready to leave and I went to brush my teeth, i was greeted by a German guy getting out the shower....naked! No towel, no nothing and not a care in the world...where the hell are we staying! All this and it wasnt even 9.30am! As we were leaving the strange hostel worker decided to warn us about putting our belongings on the floor as there are bed bugs in the carpets......didnt think about telling us this before mate no?! We packed up our stuff and quickly left the shop of horrors. We made our way to the bus station to buy our tickets to Penang. We had been warned about touts trying to drag you to their stall to buy the tickets and as expected, we arrived to a dozen men shouting for us to buy from them! We quickly chose a counter and then headed to the bus, the Islands were so much easier than this!! However, the bus was by far the most luxurious bus we have travelled on so far, so Malaysia wins there! As if today hadnt been eventful enough, the bus journey was full of events. We stopped for 30 mins for lunch. We quickly ate and headed back to the locals on the bus in uproar. The bus driver had gone missing and the 2nd driver was drunk at the back of the bus....only in Asia! After another 30 mins our driver returned and after being shouted at by the locals we continued on our eventful journey. We arrived in Penang, but not in Georgetown as we thought. We caught a cab to our Georgetown hostel, a MASSIVE improvement on our KL hostel. We spent the evening exploring the city and eating street food while getting to know the locals. We are both in love with Georgetown already!
25th November
So today Morgane had planned an arty adventure. We spent the day finding the local street art across the city. I'll be honest, the first 3 or 4 were nice and interesting.....the 20th and 21st....i need a pub! Georgetown is a beautiful place with old building a plenty. We also visited the local camera museum....trust me, its better than it sounds! Tonight we head for more street food before heading to the local Reggae Reggae bar. I dont know how we manage it but again we were being given free JD and coke all night by an ex pat! Hangovers tomorrow? yes.
26th November
Nursing my hangover I retreated to the hostel for the day and spent it mainly sleeping in true Walton fashion. Morgane was feeling slightly better so ventured out into Little India. The smell of incense couldnt be beaten by the temples of Thailand. This must be one of the most friendly places we have been, with people regularly stopping you on the street to ask how you are. Morgane found an Art Cafe to escape the heat and almost went bankrupt when considering buying a piece of art. Instead she returned to tell me how she had been ripped off by a man selling old photographs of Malay families. This evening we ventured out for Indian food. We found a little street shop where the owner ordered for us and we ate off a large napkin with our fingers...a messy job indeed.
27th November
Another relaxing day of chilling in the local cafes and walking aound the never ending streets of the city. Morgane decided she wanted to try Accupuncture. She found a temple that offered the service and ended up walking 45 mins to the place, not before arguing with a taxi man at his obseen prices! On arrival the nice lady explained that the temple closed at 4.30.....it was 4.31! Only the 45 min walk back then! This evening we decided to head to the cinema to watch the Hunger Games. Thats the positive about everyone speaking English, we can watch a film! A great night.
28th November
Up at 7am today to head to Langkowi. We used our bible (The Lonely Planet) and headed to 'the busiest place in Langkowi'. We hadnt booked as most places had bad reviews so we thought we could get somewhere better by just turning up. How wrong were we?! After trapsing the streets and searching online for somewhere half decent to stay we were at a loss. It was either cheap but had the added bonus of rats and bedbugs, or way too expensive. We eventually found somewhere to stay but both had faces of thunder for the remainder of the day. Not the best start to our Island adventure. Oh well, off to the beach tomorrow....we thought.
29th November
Weather not amazing today so we headed to the 'Top Langkowi Attraction' the cable cars. We bumped into Jay, a guy we had met in Laos and some other guys and headed up the moutain with them. The views from the top were incredible and breathtaking, that was until the rain came...again. Seems to be following us. Another amazing meal this evening where you dont decide what you eat, including meat. Food here is amazing!
30th November
As Langkowi is a duty free island we headed to the mall before our ferry back to Penang. We got a few bits and bobs ready for Aus but are at a loss as how we are going to fit it in our bags...a clean out is in order I feel. Langkowi would be an amazing place for Newly Weds and familys who pay extreme prices for a resort, but for backpackers it wasnt what we wanted or expected. Oh well, back to our favourite place of Georgetown!
