Today the motorcycles got a good running; we were given a trail map by the Big Bend Ranch State Park ranger but as we got to each of the roads, they had all been gated off. After checking the ones we wanted to ride but had not luck, we returned to the visitor center and explained that none were open to ride. The ranger was unaware that they had been closed. As it happened, there was an outfitter guy there who informed us that as of a couple of weeks ago all the trails were closed to motorized vehicles - only bicyclist and hikers were allowed. The closest off-road trail to ride the dirtbikes through the state park was 40 miles away at the only entrance to the inside of BBRSP. We were told the ride west on 170 toward Presido was along the southern boundaries of the state park and it was a very nice scenic drive; so, we set out to see what it had to offer. After about 20 miles or so we came across a former movie location along the Rio Grand, it had been used in several movies but had seen better days. Filmed there were "Uphill All The Way", "The Journeyman", "Dead Man's Walk", "My Maria", "Streets of Lorado", Rio Diablo", "Contrabando", "Gambler V: Playing for Keeps" and a few others. There were several pull off places to reach the river; all were scenic but only one rest area was unique...there were 3 teepees covering picnic tables overlooking the Rio Grand. After a brief stop at the teepee rest area, we continued until we crossed "The Big Hill"...about a 15% grade. From the top you could see a great view of Mexico, the Rio Grand and the southern ridge of the BBR State Park. Being disappointed about the lack of open trails to ride, we decided to turn back and call it a day -the day was not a wash but merely not as adverturesome as we had hoped for.
