Arriving in Desert Center, CA at Green Acres Mobile Park was not without slight incident. When making the reservations I always tell that our rig is a 45 foot long fifth wheel with triple slides, plus the truck. The owner said there was no problem and we were assigned site #3. Upon arrival, there was no way we could get under the cottonwood tree and there were no other sites with working electricity. Our next option was to cut some of the lower branches - which thrilled the owner since she had been wanting them cut. Ms. Zeller was very chatty at every opportunity and in my opinion was a historical monument, herself. She was 92 years young and had retired from Rockwell 40 years earlier; during that time she was part of the manufacturing and developement of the communications equipment for WWII; she was also part of the communications team for the first flight that carried man to the moon. She received numerous awards for her invaluable service and photos with the Neil Armstrong and the entire crew. Even at her elderly age and frail size, she still owns and maintains the Green Acres Park. Although she hires someone to cut the grass with a lawnmower, she still weedeats beacause the yardman wouldn't do the job as well as she does.
As it happened, my cousin, Chad and his wife, Yolanda - who are team drivers for a cross-country trucking company were scheduled to be in Blythe, CA late on Friday night. Not having seen him in around 15 years, we made plans to drive back to Blythe to meet them for breakfast. Ms. Zeller was more than accomodating with us leaving the rig while we drove back to enjoy our short visit with Chad and Yolanda.
My only advise if choosng to stay at Green Acres Park is bring your own water; it, too is contaminated with excessively high nitrates (as is most of the southern AZ and CA desert aquifer) and plan to use your own shower and bath. Even though the eminities are listed in the campground directory, they are marginally adequate.
