Selimiye Barracks,The barracks, located on the ridge of Üsküdar on the Anatolian side, looks even more beautiful at night. It literally shines brightly in the Bosphorus. There was a palace built by Suleiman the Magnificent where the barracks is now located.Selim III had a wooden barracks built for the newly established Nizam-ı Cedid army in the area where the palace was located between 1794 and 1799. With the Janissary uprising that broke out in 1807, this wooden barracks was completely destroyed.During the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, a stone barracks was built by Krikov Baylan, one of the most important architects of the period, between 1827 and 1829.The barracks, which was used as a tobacco warehouse for a while after the Republic, was used as a military secondary school between 1959 and 1963. It was repaired in 1963 and turned into the First Army Headquarters. During the martial law periods of the 1970s and 1980s, a military court served in the barracks. It is also used as a military detention house.
