Thessaloniki Holocaust Memorial on Freedom Square
Only a few came back and were able to re-unite with their families after the end of war in 1945. The father of Hella, alive at 91 years, is from the only surviving intact family taken to Auschwitz, He, his sister, and parents survived. He has dedicated his life to the memory of those lost which includes creating a wall in the Jewish Memorial Museum with over 37,000 names he has identified of those who died. The Jews In Thessaloniki lived before the war throughout the city. Because they were not centralized in a Jewish quarter the task of identifying those who died was that much more difficult. He continues to speak with students in schools.
